Thinking of Buying a New Car?

Thinking of replacing your modern in the new VED / Income Tax year of 2010/11?  You may well be advised to check out the CO2 consumption and appropriate VED cost because some g/km guzzling values have more than doubled for the first tax disc.

The best answers presented so far are those of Mr Money - Mike Rutherford - in the Saturday Telegraph motoring supplement and the two new tables now available on the Government web site http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/index.htm.  To put it in a nutshell, what was previously referred to as the show room cost is now inclusive in the first year VED rate from April 2010 onwards for all new cars.  The 2nd year VED will drop back down to something a little less expensive but there may be an unexpected hidden cost.

For example, in 2008 – 2009, £210 - £217.50 was paid respectively on a 2008 198g/km Nissan X-Trail. This year the VED is £235, that's an 8% increase in one year.  Whereas the pension increase, in line with (negative) inflation is not worth talking about.  But what would be payable on an X-Trail next year?

Look closely at your potential new cars CO2 band because what is going to happen in 2011/12 is still very unclear from any sourced information.  For example; if you purchase a new X-Trail of the same type this year the first year VED will be £425 and second year VED will be £415,  when the 2010 purchased car falls into the same category as an existing 2008 car.  Does that mean that next year (2011/12) I will have to pay £415 VED?, because that represents a hike of something more than 76% - in one year !  The Government and the Ministry of Transport have yet to come clean on this question except to say that on the web site it states that from April 2010, cars already registered will either pay £30 more, or less, dependent upon which CO2 band their engine falls into.
